St. Lucia is located at 14 degrees 0 minute?s north and 60 degrees 50 minutes west. St. Lucia is part of the Windward Islands. It's a volcanic island with the Grand and Petite Pitons rising from the sea. The Arawak Indians were probably the first to settle on the island of St. Lucia. The English and the French fought over the island from 1600 to 1814. It then became a British crown Colony until independence was granted in 1979. For years the economy was dominated by sugar. Tourism is now a major source of income for the island. The population is 145,000. English is the official language. The island has constant trade winds with minor differences throughout the year. Hurricane season is from June to November.
